Even though whole families come to the fair, it is mostly a male event. Men conduct all transactions and early in the morning leave to start their business.
Nights in Pushkar can be cool in November. Comes 10:00 a.m. however is is very warm/hot and time for tourists to look for shade.
As a tourist at the Pushkar fair, you feel perfectly safe. It is a busy and crowded place and locals will look at you … in the same way you look at them. Farmers will come and try to exchange a few words. A big topic of conversation was the election of Barack Obama. I found it amazing that so far from home, people were discussing that issue. After all, how often do we talk about India in France or in the United States?
Vendors at the fair can be a little “pushy” since it is peak business season for them. A large portion of their income comes from sales during that one week. Prices first announced can be divided by 2, 3,5, 10 ? Necklaces made of camel bones, silver anklets, carved elephants, handmade locks with pretty key, books with photos of the fair etc. A vendor came to me waving one of those books. I told him I had purchased one earlier so he replied; “Madam! 2 no problem!” . You laugh and smile a lot at the fair, Some scenes are touching and others really funny. How often do you get the opportunity to spend a day with camels, horses, cows. farmers in turbans, elegant women in saris and hundreds of playful children? I stayed at the fair for the full week to appreciate all the differents events and each day was full of suprises and fun.

All animals at the Pushkar Fair are very fascinating to observe.
Beautiful horses are also for sale.
Cows are there also and carefully examined by possible buyers.
Very colorful turbans can be seen all over Rajasthan. More on turbans later.

The big annual Pushkar fair

Every year, for 8 days before the full moon of November, a big cattle fair/religious festival is held in Pushkar (Rajasthan). Full moon in 2008 was on November 13. Fair started on the 5th.
Farmers with their families come to purchase cattle, mostly camels and horses. They live in a large campground and conduct fierce transactions. Here are a few details regarding the cattle/camel fair.
This camel is very well decorated. At some point during the fair, there was a camel beauty contest. The best decorated camel won a prize in money for his owner.
